McHenry Hohnen 'Burnside Vineyard' Chardonnay 2023
Planted in 1981 on a steep north-facing slope, McHenry Hohnen’s Burnside Vineyard is one of Margaret River’s most distinctive Chardonnay sites. Its granitic soils are rich in mica, and its proximity to the coast brings freshness and drive. The 2023 vintage was hand picked and wild fermented with full solids in French oak, including 40% new barrels, all sourced from a single vineyard. The wine spent time on fine lees to build texture and was bottled without undergoing malolactic fermentation. This is a Chardonnay of power, detail and mineral clarity, shaped by old vines and natural farming.
Appearance
Pale straw with light green highlights and bright clarity.
Nose
Fresh almond pastry, pink grapefruit zest and roasted hazelnut, with flinty lift and savoury lees character.
Palate
Full bodied and layered with summer peach, fruit salad and citrus. Toasted nuts and fine oak bring weight, while firm acidity carries through to a long, precise finish.
