McHenry Hohnen 'Hazel’s Vineyard' Zinfandel 2022
This 2022 Zinfandel is drawn from McHenry Hohnen’s southern-most single vineyard in Margaret River. Hazel’s Vineyard delivers small, intense berries from Lodi clone vines grown in ironstone gravel loam on north-facing slopes. Hand-picked in the cool of the night, the fruit was wild fermented in concrete vats with 15 percent whole clusters to enhance depth. After around 14 days, the wine was gently pressed to old French and American barrels for 14 months of maturation. The final bottling was unfined with minimal sulphur, preserving vibrant purity and ageworthy structure. This is a rare Australian Zinfandel shaped by natural farming, coastal energy and vineyard personality.
Appearance
Dense ruby with deep purple rim and polished weight.
Nose
Lifted aromas of raspberries, rose petals and cherry compote segue into red liquorice and fragrant five spice.
Palate
Juicy crunch of red fruit, layered with cinnamon spice and dark berry intensity. The structure is silky yet defined by smooth, cocoa-like tannins and fresh natural acidity.
