Situated in the historic Serralunga d’Alba commune, Massolino has long been celebrated for its uncompromisingly classic expressions of Barolo. Their 2017 Parussi, sourced from the cru’s sandy, limestone-rich slopes in Castiglione Falletto, shows the estate’s refined, terroir-driven approach to Nebbiolo. The wine marries depth and structure with the lifted aromatics typical of Parussi, offering a poised, age-worthy interpretation of a warm vintage.
Appearance
A radiant garnet core that gently fades to a pale brick-orange rim, classic for Nebbiolo. The wine displays excellent transparency and luminosity, with slow, elegant tears that hint at both concentration and graceful tannic presence.
NoseA beautifully layered, expressive bouquet. Wild red cherry, dried rose petals and ripe raspberry unfold first, followed by notes of pomegranate, blood orange zest and subtle redcurrant. Beneath the fruit lie deeper nuances of dried herbs, pressed violets, star anise and soft tobacco leaf. Hints of warm earth, crushed stones and a delicate spice lift (white pepper, clove) reflect Parussi’s distinctive mix of elegance and minerality.
Palate
Structured, poised and finely etched. Silky red fruit, cherry, cranberry, macerated strawberry, glides across a firm but refined tannic frame. The mid-palate reveals layers of sweet spice, subtle licorice root and a gentle savoury undercurrent reminiscent of dried mushroom and leather. The acidity is vibrant and vertical, giving clarity and precision to the wine’s progression. The finish is long, resonant and classically Barolo: mineral, floral and delicately tannic, promising further complexity with time.
Overall
Massolino’s 2017 Barolo Parussi is a graceful yet powerful expression of Nebbiolo from one of Castiglione Falletto’s most characterful crus. Its combination of aromatic lift, structural finesse and mineral depth makes it a superb partner for dishes such as truffle risotto, braised veal, mushroom ragù, game birds or aged cheeses. While already beautifully expressive, the wine’s balance suggests excellent ageing potential, cellaring will reveal deeper notes of tar, dried rose, forest floor and savoury spice over the next decade and beyond.
