McHenry Hohnen 'Burnside Vineyard' Chardonnay 2022
Burnside Vineyard is one of the most historic Chardonnay sites in Margaret River, planted in 1981 on mica-rich granitic soils just inland from the coast. The 2022 vintage was a benchmark year for Chardonnay in the region, producing wines with purity, energy and exceptional structure. This single vineyard wine was hand picked, whole bunch pressed and wild fermented in French oak barrels, about 30 percent of which were new. It spent extended time on lees to build texture, with no malolactic fermentation to retain freshness and drive. The result is a wine of mineral clarity, firm acidity and focused power. Awarded 99 points by Angus Hughson, this is a landmark release from one of the region’s most expressive vineyard sites.
Appearance: Pale straw with green highlights and brilliant clarity
Nose: Fresh almond pastry, white nectarine and nougat with flinty lift and savoury depth
Palate: Structured and intense, with layers of stone fruit, florals, peach skin and vibrant citrus. A firm mineral backbone leads to a long, clean finish.
