Pizzo Coca Valtellina Superiore Grumello Riserva 2016
Situated on the steep, terraced slopes above Sondrio, Pizzo Coca is known for producing exceptionally pure, high-altitude expressions of Nebbiolo (locally called Chiavennasca). Their Grumello Valtellina Superiore Riserva draws from ancient mountain vineyards rooted in schist, granite and morainic soils, capturing the tension, lift and minerality that define this historic subzone. Long ageing and meticulous selection result in a wine of striking finesse, aromatic complexity and unmistakable Alpine character.
Appearance
A transparent yet vibrant ruby garnet, gently fading to an orange-tinged rim. The wine shows crystalline clarity and a delicate, slow-forming web of tears, reflecting both its mountain acidity and its evolved, graceful structure.
Nose
A refined and high-toned aromatic profile. Notes of wild strawberry, redcurrant and dried cherry rise first, interwoven with classic Valtellina signatures of rose petal, violet and Alpine herbs. Subtle layers of sweet spices, cinnamon, star anise, nutmeg, meld with hints of crushed stone, dried orange peel, mountain pine and a touch of underbrush. A whisper of smoke and iron minerality evokes the rocky, sun-drenched terraces of Grumello.
Palate
Elegant, lifted and beautifully linear. Juicy red berries, sour cherry and cranberry glide across a finely etched backbone of acidity and minerality. The tannins are refined and powdery, offering structure without heaviness. Mid-palate flavours of dried flowers, spice, citrus rind and subtle savoury notes (dried porcini, tea leaf, leather) unfold gradually. The finish is long, taut and classically Alpine, saline, floral, mineral and gently earthy, promising further harmony with age.
Overall
Pizzo Coca’s Grumello Valtellina Superiore Riserva is a superbly poised mountain Nebbiolo that balances delicacy with depth. Its lifted aromatics, precise structure and mineral drive make it an ideal partner for dishes such as braised rabbit, roasted game birds, polenta with porcini, alpine cheeses or delicate beef preparations. Already expressive, it also has the acidity and tannic finesse to age gracefully, developing richer notes of dried flowers, spice, truffle and stony complexity over the next decade.
