Prunotto Bussia Barolo DOCG 2016
Situated in the heart of the Barolo zone, Prunotto has been a benchmark for expressive, approachable Nebbiolo since its founding in Alba. Their Barolo Bussia DOCG 2016 is sourced from one of the estate’s top vineyards in the renowned Bussia cru of Monforte d’Alba, known for its deep soils and south-facing exposures. The wine exemplifies the estate’s commitment to balance, refinement, and clarity of terroir, delivering a classic, age-worthy Barolo from a strong 2016 vintage.
Appearance
A deep garnet with a bright ruby core, showing remarkable clarity. The wine forms elegant, slow-moving legs on the glass, hinting at both concentration and a polished texture. The rim shows early garnet-orange hues, signaling the beginning of graceful maturation.
Nose
A layered, expressive bouquet. Ripe red cherry, raspberry, and wild strawberry dominate initially, interwoven with floral notes of rose petal and violet. Underlying aromas of licorice, sweet tobacco, cedar, and a subtle earthy truffle emerge with aeration. Delicate hints of dried herbs, white pepper, and mineral nuances reflect the calcareous-clay soils of the Bussia cru.
Palate
Elegant, structured, and finely balanced. Juicy red fruits, cherry, cranberry, and tart raspberry, flow across a silky framework of well-integrated tannins. The mid-palate reveals secondary layers of sweet spice, gentle leather, and subtle underbrush. Vibrant acidity lifts the palate, providing drive and clarity, while the finish is long, resonant, and classically Barolo: mineral, floral, and savory, with persistence that suggests further evolution in bottle.
Overall
Prunotto’s 2016 Barolo Bussia DOCG is a superb expression of Monforte d’Alba Nebbiolo. Its aromatic lift, refined tannins, and mineral backbone make it an excellent companion to braised veal, truffle risotto, roasted game birds, or aged cheeses. The wine is approachable now with careful decanting but offers excellent aging potential, allowing the development of tertiary notes of dried flowers, forest floor, and sweet spice over the next 10–15 years.
